Life on Board

What should I bring?
There is actually very little for you to bring onboard for your Blue Cruise gulet experience. The weather is generally very mild with warm days and slightly cooler evenings. April – May and September-October can be a little cooler both in the day and evening, so bring a sweatshirt or light jacket and long pants if you plan to come during that season. The boat life calls for casual dress as do the villages and towns you will visit. That said, make sure to bring a camera, sunglasses, hat, sun screen, a couple of swim suits, a few pairs of shorts and t-shirts, wraps or pullovers for women are a good idea, and a light sweater or jacket for evenings. Boat shoes or bare feet are required onboard and you will want some comfortable walking/hiking shoes or sandals for land excursions. Along with your personal care essentials, you may want to bring your own snorkeling equipment (although Delmar has a selection for your use) also a MP3 player and/or book that you have been longing to read. All of the above should be packed in a soft duffle bag or backpack rather than a rigid suitcase so that it is easier to stow away within your cabin. Delmar will supply your linens, bath towels, beach towel and hairdryer (electricity is 220 v 50 Hz, plugs are European style round pin).

What is the weather like?
At the beginning and end of the sailing season (April, May and October), temperatures range between 20 and 26 degrees centigrade (68 – 79 Fahrenheit). During the summer months (June – September) it can be much warmer ranging from 30 to 38 degrees centigrade (86 – 100 Fahrenheit). It is not humid, there is often a breeze blowing and it seldom rains during the summer.

What do we do all day?
As a private yacht charter, we are very flexible about where we go and how long we stay there. You are in the driver seat! While the Captain of your boat will be full of helpful suggestions, your voyage can be tailored to your personal desires and interests. Please keep in mind that we will do our best to accommodate your requirements, provided the weather and other conditions permit.
Generally, you can determine the amount of time you want to spend in any particular uninhabited bay or lively little town full of restaurants, shops and pubs. During the day time, you may choose to relax in the sun or under the shaded canopy while reading a book, listening to music and visiting with friends and family.
Later you may want to take a refreshing swim around the boat or snorkel along the rocky shoreline to view the underwater sea life. Take a paddle past neighboring yachts with Delmar’s kayak or float around with your friends in a flotilla of noodle chairs. Fishing is always an option for those who are interested, which is done the traditional Turkish way with a dropline.
If you are looking for more action, many of the bays offer water skiing, wake boarding, jet skiing, banana and tube towables and parasailing which is provided by local venders. You can bring your own snorkeling equipment or use a selection provided by Delmar. For scuba diving, there are separate dive tours available. Scuba diving is not allowed from Delmar.
All this, to do and it will need to fit between three fabulous meals presented each day (plus snacks) served onboard for your enjoyment. Excursions onshore open up a world of additional activities including hiking, shopping, dining, pubbing, visiting museums and ancient antiquities and exploring all kinds of cultural wonders.
We can arrange for intermittent land excursions like a safari boat ride up the historic Dalyan River for example and including visits to archeological sites, historical landmarks as well as various sport adventure opportunities.
Please feel free to contact us early in your trip planning process. We will be happy to help you to set your itinerary so that your trip goes as smooth as possible and don’t miss seeing or experiencing the important attractions that Turkey has to offer.

How often will we sail with no engine power?
Delmar is first and foremost a Sailing Gulet. The captain and crew will nearly always choose sailing over motoring when the wind and weather permit. That being said, wind conditions on the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas can be fickle and sometines inconsistent. It is not always easy to know when and where there will be wind. Additionally, the physics of a sail boat does not allow the boat to sail directly into the wind. Therefore, to get to a destination that is directly up wind requires a zig-zag path known as tacking. Somtimes the extra time and distance required by tacking is not justified. In this case, the captain may choose to motor instead of sailing in order to reach the desired destination at the scheduled time. With most itineraries, Delmar will embark to the next destination at around 9:00 - 10:00 am. Travel time to the next destination is generally between 1 - 6 hours. Hopfully, most or all of this time will be spent sailing. The daily chartering fee includes fuel for Delmar's deisel engine for up to 4 hours per day. This amount is more than adequate in most cases. The motor is also used while traveling in bays, harbors and marinas.

Can I smoke on board the yacht?
Smoking is allowed on the exterior portions of the yacht only. Please be sure to use the ash trays provided on deck. SMOKING IS PROHIBITED ANYWHERE INSIDE THE YACHT. It is strictly against maritime law to smoke in your cabin, bathroom or anywhere else inside the ship.

Is sailing on Delmar suitable for children?
Children are very much welcome on Delmar! There is nothing like enjoying the sailing experience through the eyes of a child. Children are bound to have an amazing time while on Delmar. There are many activities for kids to enjoy and there is no better way to bond as a family then sailing around the Med, swimming, exploring, dining and playing games with each other. Delmar is equiped with secure safety rails which run the length of the ship and there is a fair amount of room for children to move around safely even when under sail. Children should always wear an approved floatation devise when on deck, especially non-swimmers. Supervision of children is the sole responsibility of their parents or guardians. At no time are the captain or crew responsible for the supervision of children on Delmar.

I have limited mobility. Can I still enjoy a gulet cruise?
On Delmar, we are more than happy to accommodate our guests individual needs to the best of our ability. Persons with limited mobility should have no problem enjoying a Blue Cruise holiday on Delmar. Please feel free to contact us to discuss your particular needs and how we can make special arrangements to suit you.

How many people will be on the yacht?
Delmar can accommodate up to 6 guests. The master cabin has a double bed. The two other guest cabins both also have double beds. The captains cabin can be available for guests and it also has a double bed (no in-suite toilet). During mid-season, the weather is very warm even at night. Many of our guests choose to sleep outside, on deck under the awnings for a very comfortable and relaxing nights sleep under the stars. In addition to 6 guests, there will also be the captain, chef and one or two deck hands. Therefore, the maximum number of people on the ship will not exceed 10 persons. We do not allow cabin rentals, so all of the guests will be from your group only.

What time and day will we embark?

What is the best time of the year to cruise in Turkey?
The Blue Cruise Sailing season begins in March and ends in October. March and April can be very beautiful and uncrowded, however, the water can be cool for swimming and evening temperatures are cool. Also many restaurants and pubs in town may still be closed for winter. May and June are very pleasant months for your Blue Voyage. The summer heat hasn't yet arrived and the weather is just about perfect! Evening temps and water temps may still be on the cool side, however. By July and August, things start to heat up! Now the water is warm and so are the evenings. Daytime temperatures can exceed 37 degrees celcius or 100 degrees fehrenheit. But on the sea, it is not too humid and there is usually a cool breeze. The night life is much more brisk this time of the year as well. For your comfort, airconditioning is available in your cabin as well as the salon, but you may choose to sleep on deck for the most enjoyment. September might be the best month of all with deminishing crowds, perfect weather day and night and warm water for swimming. October begins to cool down a bit, but still very enjoyable! If your into racing, perhaps you will want to join Delmar for the Bodrum Cup Sailing Regatta which is held annually during the third week of October!

Will Delmar cruise at night?
Normally, Delmar does not cruise at night. Typically a change in distination begins in the morning around 9:00 or 10:00 am. Delmar will then sail for no more than 6 hours, depending on the destination. The new destination will be reached by at least late afternoon. Then Delmar will be anchored safely for the night in the next protected cove, bay or harbor.
